How wagamama Saved £1 Million in Energy Costs with Clearworld

wagamama has achieved 11% average YOY energy savings across more than 140 restaurants by giving Clearworld the opportunity to do what they do best: make existing systems work harder, smarter and more efficiently than before.

Smarter Energy

From Good Habits to

Automated Control

Most restaurant operators know energy is a cost worth managing. Few have the time or visibility to actually do it. wagamama's property and sustainability teams wanted to take a proactive approach to reducing consumption.

Results

11% Reduction Across 140 Sites,
4 years into the project.

wagamama has achieved 11% average energy savings across the estate from day one of installation despite ongoing electrification of stores. The majority of savings are coming from eliminating out-of-hours consumption across AC units, heater batteries, immersion heaters and overdoor heaters. Our controls ensure equipment is used only when needed and, when it is, at optimal settings.

To date, this has delivered:

There is no settling-in period or behaviour change programme required. The savings are immediate because Vision iQ simply takes over the decisions that used to get forgotten at the end of a busy shift.

Now we have a system in place that allows the team to work on what really matters: food, service and our customers. It works in the background, controlling our AC, temperatures and extraction systems.

wagamama recognised the importance of effective energy management and already had processes in place to support energy-efficient practices. However, the demands of a busy restaurant environment meant there was an opportunity to build on this foundation. Clearworld combined real-time visibility and automated controls with ongoing team engagement, helping wagamama optimise energy consumption across its estate, throughout different operating periods and seasons.

As one of the heaviest energy consumers in any restaurant environment, HVAC was identified as a solid candidate for control.

Restaurants are busy environments and constantly adjusting and controlling the AC to ensure optimal energy usage simply isn't possible. wagamama knew savings could be made, but they wanted a silent system to work in the background without impacting customer experience.

What wagamama says about our solution

Wagamama Logo

We already had processes in place to manage equipment usage efficiently, but in a busy restaurant environment, it’s understandable that switches can occasionally be missed and equipment left running during prep or overnight. Clearworld gives us greater visibility and automation, helping us build on those existing practices and ensure we’re using energy as efficiently as possible across our estate.

Device-Level Visibility,
Zero Operational
Disruption

We installed energy controls by connecting directly to the high-energy-consuming equipment at each site, across a couple of nights of planned work, with no disruption to restaurant operations. The hardware sits completely out of sight, and there is nothing new for teams to learn or manage on a daily basis.

Panoramic Power sub-metering gives wagamama minute-by-minute, device-by-device visibility across every site in the estate, while smart scheduling makes sure that high-energy assets switch off automatically when they should and run more efficiently when they need to.

Temperature sensors in customer-facing areas feed directly into the HVAC systems, which means the temperature is always where it needs to be without any manual input from the team. The restaurants run optimally behind the scenes, and Clearworld's support bureau is on hand when things need adjustment.

A Rollout Built on
Evidence, Not
Assumptions

We started with two wagamama sites to prove the concept and establish a clear baseline, which achieved 30 and 15% respectively. From there, the rollout extended into a small Phase 1, with each subsequent phase backed by real data from the last, building confidence across the business at every step.

For a business operating at this scale, that kind of measured approach removes the risk of committing a full estate to something unproven, and it gives everyone in the business the confidence to keep moving forward.

Once this rollout process was established, it became repeatable and straightforward for a large estate. The success required close collaboration between Clearworld, property, operations, and individual restaurant teams.

Continuous Improvement at Scale

Kaizen, the philosophy of continuous good change, isn't a concept that lives in a boardroom at wagamama. It shows up in the day-to-day running of the business. Energy reduction at this scale, consistent, measurable, and growing over time, is exactly what that looks like in practice. And none of it asks anything different of the teams on the ground.

wagamama approached Clearworld looking for a partner to help it get more from its existing equipment and processes. Together, the teams identified where automation and better visibility could make the biggest difference, all without changing how the restaurants run day to day.

That relationship hasn't stopped at installation. Across four completed phases and two years of partnership, we have kept providing energy and maintenance data and stayed in regular contact with sites, refining each phase based on the last.

“Clearworld has helped wagamama take a smarter, more proactive approach to energy management across our estate. What stands out most is the strength of the partnership; this isn’t just a one-off installation, but an ongoing relationship that allows us to review performance, work with our teams and continually identify opportunities to improve.

“By combining their technology with our focus on energy management, we’re delivering measurable savings and operational efficiencies while allowing our teams to focus on what matters most: our customers.”

Vision iQ

This is an indicative estimate based on benchmark assumptions for your sector, not a guaranteed saving. Clearworld will validate the figure with half-hourly data and/or a site survey before any formal savings proposal.

The ROI assumes an indicative Vision iQ investment of per site plus per site per month, set against the expected saving shown.
